EB 2014 Faces New Challenges with Innovative Concepts (Introduction)

EB-SanDiego-CoverArt

This year, San Diego brought balmy SoCal climate and culture to six concurrent annual meetings of the best and brightest in Experimental Biology. Seminars in finding and transferring careers, sessions on the state of the biological economy, an abundant exhibit floor and lots of consulting and conferring with colleagues, advisors, and prospective collaborators are the foundation of this event.

Hosting 14,000 scientists and exhibitors along with a professional research schedule, six major societies met to discuss transforming the future with science. Being introduced to the American Association of Anatomists (AAA), the American Physiological Society (APS), the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB), the American Society for Investigative Pathology (ASIP), the American Nutrition Society (ASN), and the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET) is at first a daunting experience.

As a first timer to this event, but a long time visitor to countless seminars, symposiums and trade shows, this one is different in many great ways. First, the event staff is exceptional. Those of you old timers would probably recognize the directory (I first wondered why there a lot of people sitting and looking at a San Diego phone book). Once you get a chance to review it, you may also find it to be comprehensive and a keeper until next year. As a publisher, I quickly looked at how to make it digitally accessible.

Next, the venue was perfect. The San Diego Convention Center is in one of our most beautiful cities and while February can be less than perfect for SoCalers, it was absolutely wonderful. Attendees that I talked with were from virtually everywhere. Those from Canada, Great Briton, and northeast US were delighted.

Nearby harbor attractions include the largest economic impact to the area the navy, with Point Loma Naval Air Station. The waterfront adds the USS Midway Air Craft Carrier, a ferry to Coronado (Admirals Island), and even water sports.
